Before AI was a part of our daily lives, this piece was an experiment of AI-generated art and its relation to music. This words for this piece, in a way, brought themselves into being through the creativity of the composer in conjunction with the art. It started with the simple line, “as i live, so shall i die;” which was given to the computer, creating an image that looked like a digital painting. This new piece of art inspired more words until an entire poem was formed.
The most beautiful part is that the words don’t feel computer generated, they have created a story that feels genuinely human. It stares mortality in the face and confronts the difficult concept of the legacy we leave behind after our souls “cascade over still waters” beyond this life. Even more, it became a subconscious expression of myself as an artist, the fact that I live my life trying to share every melody, every lyric, every bit of music that passes through my head. And, in the end, I’ll never be able to share all of it. My words, unfinished in life, will forever remain unfinished in whatever comes after this.
The artwork has been curated into a virtual gallery that can be found at https://visit.virtualartgallery.com/unfinishedwordsremain/
Even the gallery appears unfinished, as if the digital walls have more story to tell. The art is not owned by any one person, it is not for sale, and it does not have one meaning. AI has come a long way since 2022 and will likely continue to revolutionize the way that the world works. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that nothing can replace the humanness of musical connection .
